The Woodlands LearningRX Offers Guided Shopping Experience on December 12th

THE WOODLANDS LEARNINGRX OFFERS GUIDED SHOPPING EXPERIENCE ON DECEMBER 12THE WOODLANDS, TX – The Woodlands LearningRx is teaming up with local toy store Learning Express to offer parents practical tips to make savvy shopping choices.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday Dec. 12, Kim Bellini, owner and director of The Woodlands LearningRx, will be on hand at the shop to answer questions and provide suggestions to shoppers looking for games and toys that can build brain power.

“Why not buy something that is fun and also improves problem-solving skills,” Bellini said. “Toys and games can be very effective tools for stimulating cognitive skills, the mental tools we use to acquire knowledge and solve problems.”

She recommends games that require children to concentrate, use their memory or think symbolically.

“When children have fun playing and learning at the same time, the experience builds new skills, confidence and self-esteem,” she added.

During the event at Learning Express, 10 percent of sales will be donated to Parents Supporting Parents of Texas, a nonprofit group that provides support of children with special needs.

Bellini reminds parents that:

  • A “smart” toy box will stimulate the brain and build core cognitive skills.
  • Parents can help their kids get smarter at any age.
  • Brain research shows that the brain continues to grow throughout life.
  • Children who are already good learners will do even better in school with stronger cognitive skills.
  • Parents should take 30 minutes three times each week to focus on developing strong cognitive skills in their children.
  • One way to strengthen cognitive skills is to use fun, game-like activities.

Here are a few of Bellini’s picks for games that build brain power:

1. Spot It  For children ages 7 to 12, this game uses 55 circular cards, each decorated with eight symbols. Spot It builds processing speed — it moves fast and requires strong visual perception, memory and matching skills.

2. Kanoodle — For ages 7 years and older, Kanoodle is a solitaire game in a pocket-sized case. Using colored connected beads, students construct designs in two formats — 2D puzzles and 3D pyramids. There are hundreds of possible combinations.

3. Speed Stacks – This popular game for all ages tests Fitness, agility, concentration and quickness.

4. Blink – For ages 5 and older, Blink is a card game that tests visual processing and speed. Players must be quick on their feet to match the cards in their hand – based on shape, count, or color.

5. Thinkfun Distraction – For ages 8 and older, this game builds working memory, as players attempt to answer questions while faced with distractions.

Creating fun ways to build cognitive skills is one of the key objectives of The Woodlands LearningRx, a brain-training center that offers one-on-one programs to transform a student’s ability to learn at a core level.
