Memorial Hermann The Woodlands IRONKIDS Fun Run

ironkidsTHE WOODLANDS, TX – The First Children’s Memorial Hermann IRONKIDS Fun Run is a unique chance for children ages 3 to 15 to gather for a quarter-mile or one-mile run in a great family setting at Town Green Park in The Woodlands on Saturday, May 9 at 9 a.m.

The first 1,200 registered participants will receive a race bib, finisher shirt or hat and an IRONKIDS goodie bag. All participants will have a chance to interact with Houston Rockets mascot Clutch and Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital mascot Topper. Free face-painting by junior volunteers will also be made available to participants. In addition, IRONMAN has pledged $4 from each $15 registration fee to benefit Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital.

Participants can register online at IRONKIDS.com and check in to the event from 7-8:45 a.m.

“We are so excited to partner with IRONMAN for this unique children’s event in our community,” said Josh Urban, CEO of Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital. “This is a great family event that brings to life the IRONKIDS message that a fun and active lifestyle is important at an early age. We are just as thrilled and thankful that this event is going to benefit Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital.”

Urban is a three-time finisher at the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, Hawaii and will attend the race with his son.

The IRONKIDS program inspires children to lead active, positive and healthy lifestyles through sport. IRONKIDS participate in activities with age-appropriate distances that emphasize safety, fitness and fun in the days leading up to events like the Memorial Hermann IRONMAN North American Championship in The Woodlands on May 16, 2015.

While the Children’s Memorial Hermann IRONKIDS Texas Fun Run is a lively way for some participants to get some exercise, it may serve for others as the starting point on the path to a competitive or recreational interest in distance events. For T.J. Fry, a resident of The Woodlands and former professional triathlete who is now a triathlon coach, IRONKIDS was a big part of the journey toward a budding career.

“IRONKIDS was a key driver in getting me hooked on the sport of triathlon and ultimately chasing a pro career,” Fry said.

Fry competed in numerous IRONKIDS events in 1987 and 1988 before winning the IRONKIDS National Championship in 1988 when he was 14. The following year he became the youngest person ever to represent the United States in the first ever Triathlon World Championships.

“It was a great production, and they really made the kids feel special,” Fry said of his IRONKIDS experiences. “Those are great memories.”
